Youths rush for recruitment

Imphal, February 17 : Amidst hue and cry of the issue of Special Police Officers (SPOs) of Heirok, Thoubal district, for the alleged negligence by the state government, recruitment rally for Village Defence Force (VDF) begins on Monday in three districts of Thoubal, Imphal West and Bishnupur.

According to reports, the Monday recruitment witnessed a huge turn-out of youths in the Thoubal district while it was a low turn-out in Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.

Atleast 3000 youths turned up at Thoubal Basu ground while about a thousand turned up for the recruitment in Imphal West district which was held at the 2nd Manipur Rifles' battalion ground and about 800 turned up for Bishnupur district.

Official reports said that Thoubal will recruit 500 VDF while 350 each be recruited for Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.

The recruitment will continue for atleast two to three days, as per the reports.

Talking to media persons during the rally, senior superintendent of the Imphal West district police, L.Kailun, said that the VDF will receive a sum of Rs.3000/ each as monthly salary besides ration and uniforms etc.

He also said that the initial training period for the VDF will be for one year which could be extended and added that they will be posted at their concerned police outposts.

Interacting with the media at the recruitment rally, one Ch.

Khogen, 21, of Nambol Bishnupur district, a ten standard student, revealed that he decided to joint the VDF so as to defend his village and added that he is a job seeker and had never taken part in any recruitment rally.

Another youth, Themba, 21, of Heigrujam Mamang Leikai, Imphal West district, a student of eleven standard revealed that this is the second time that he has to take part in such recruitment.
