IMPHAL, Feb 6 : The joint action committee on Jiri-Tupul railway line has appealed not to divert the railway line which has to pass Tingmul, Gouakot and Kambiron sub-stations from the 5 km point before reaching Tingmul.
Lalkholen Thangeo, chairman of the JAC, speaking at a press meet held today at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal said that in 2004 the Prime Minister of India, railway officials and engineers came and laid the foundation stone of the railway line after survey, which included the railway tracks of Tingmul, Gouakot and Kambiron sub-stations.
He also said that the people of that area were happy that the railway tracks would pass through those three sub-stations bringing with it good communication and economic development.
The line will also help in development of 30 villages besides the tracks which would not be possible if the tracks was diverted, he added.
In that area there is a big communication gap and even a jeep (taxi) cannot pass through the area.
He further added that work on the railway line started well but after an engineer died in an accident the works came to a halt.
When the work started again after a gap the plan of the diversion came up, he said.
Regarding the incident the JAC has submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Manipur on January 3, 2009 and the chief minister had said that he would meet and talk with the railway authorities.
The JAC also submitted a memorandum to the general manager of the North Eastern Frontier Railway asking for the dropping of the plan to divert the railway line.
He said the people were happy that development would come to their remote villages and appealed for the railway line to remain as planned earlier. He added that the JAC would launch various protests until the railway line passed through the three sub-stations.
