Normal life paralysed, vehicles damaged in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 18 : Normal life was brought to a standstill and over 50 vehicles were damaged at various places during the 48-hour Manipur bandh called to protest the killing of a Sub-Divisional Officer and his two staff members by suspected hill-based militants, official reports said.

Supporters of the bandh, called by a local action committee and supported by several major social organisations, damaged vehicles at Sagolband, Kakwa, Yumnam Leikai and many other places for defying it, the reports said.

They said supporters of the bandh blocked the road at many places in Imphal and greater Imphal areas and set afire vehicle tyres at major roads here.

Shops, markets, business establishments were closed while attendance in government was "almost nil". Transport services between Manipur and neighbouring states and also within the state were cancelled in response to the bandh which began from midnight last, the reports said.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed by local residents called the bandh in protest against the brutal killing of SDO of Kasom Khullen in Ukhrul district, Thingnam Kishan, his driver Aribam Rajen and an official of his department Y Token, whose bodies were found yesterday at Taphou area of Senapati district.
