Awareness campaign against swine flu near India-Myanmar border
Kamjong (Manipur), May 7 : Veterinary doctors and other authorities have geared up to combat swine flu outbreak by launching awareness campaign among residents and by organising massive vaccination for pigs in villages near India-Myanmar border in Manipur.
Doctors recently organized an awareness campaign in Awongtang Kamjong border village of Ukhrul District, around 120 kilometers away from Imphal.
As preventive measures, department workers and officials have started awareness programme in border areas such as Kamjong and Poi in Ukhrul district, by visiting and conducting public meetings with the representatives of different civil organizations of the Kamjong Village.
Doctors are highlighting the probable threats of transmitting the disease from the livestock animals that are illegally imported from Myanmar to the village.
"Especially here people of this place are doing business of livestock trade especially pig or avian’s and other livestock. As this place is important place for transportation of animals from international border area, so we like to give message to people for taking precautionary measures of the dreaded disease of swine flu," said Dr. K. Gopal Singh, a disease specialists.
Authorities are also appealing other civil bodies and church representatives to check and prevent any kind of import of livestocks from Myanmar, as the State Government has already banned such imports of livestocks.
Residents involved in the livestock trade are happy with the awareness progaramme as they believe it would really help in dealing with deadly disease to great extent.
"The Veterinary Department has already announced the disease as deadly and dangerous disease. We are grateful and happy that the efforts taken by the department to educate and make us aware of the disease," said S. D Lowin Singh, a resident.
Although the Central Government has only issued an advisory to all states in the remote northeastern region and not sounded any particular directives, the State Government has initiated preventive measures against swine fever.

Because of the election code of conduct, the team could not distribute relief materials on the spot. They were greeted by angry protesters who were agitating over the inadequate fire-fighting equipment. However, the team was allowed to perform their duties. Only one fire tender stationed at the district headquarters fought the blaze for four hours with help from the Assam Rifles and the state’s law enforcing agencies.

IMPHAL, Jan 24 : After a three days of standoff between a group of NSCN(IM) men who tried to set up a camp in Siroi village and troops of the Assam Rifles, the matter has been brought to a conclusion today with the NSCN(IM) men seeking safe passage of their men to their officially recognized designated camps.
A press release by the IGAR (South) said that NSCN (IM) cadres attempted to establish a camp in close vicinity of Siroy village early this month.

Indian paratrooper kills six fellow soldiers
GUWAHATI, India: A paratrooper in a remote mountainous area of India's troubled northeast went on a shooting rampage, killing six of his own unit after an altercation, security officials said Thursday.
The incident took place Wednesday night in restive Manipur state's Ukhrul district, about 90 km (55 miles) east of the capital Imphal, where the country's oldest paramilitary force, the Assam Rifles, is deployed for anti-insurgency operations.
In the sixth such incident in the region in the past two years, the paratrooper shot dead one member of his unit in its camp after an altercation whose cause is unknown.
Others rushed to the scene when they heard gunshots. The paratrooper then opened indiscriminate fire, killing five more on the spot and wounding two.
Security forces launched a massive search operation in the mountains after he escaped with automatic weapons and a large quantity of ammunition.
"Before anyone present in the camp could realise what had happened, the soldier fled from the site," Major Shamsher Jung, Assam Rifles spokesman, said in Imphal.
The stress of being posted in remote conflict areas for long periods, and cases of alcoholism, are often blamed for the killing of dozens of soldiers in quarrels over not being granted leave and other personal issues.
Soldiers face danger not only from militants but also tough terrain and extreme weather conditions, experts say.
In July, a soldier burst into his officer's room and shot him dead.
Ringed by China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan, India's northeast is home to more than 200 tribes and has been racked by separatist revolts since India gained independence from Britain in 1947.
Militant groups accuse New Delhi of plundering the region's mineral and forest resources, but investing little in return.
India has placed military, paramilitary and police forces under a single regional command to tackle the rebellion.

The incident took place Wednesday night in restive Manipur state's Ukhrul district, about 90 km (55 miles) east of the capital Imphal, where the country's oldest paramilitary force, the Assam Rifles, is deployed for anti-insurgency operations.
