Churachandpur, Feb 11 : A one-day seminar organised by the Churachandpur District Students` Union, CDSU, on the topic `Tribal land ownership and development in Manipur` was held today at the KKL complex, Headquarter Veng.
A seminar paper was presented by the Outer Manipur member of parlaiment, MP Cheranamei on the topic `Land and forest` while K Vungzamawi, a lecturer presented a paper on `Tribal land ownership and development`.
During the seminar Cheranamei said that ours was a land-based economy and land was the most important factor in the tribal based economy. But we somehow failed to maintain and manage our land due to primarily ignorance.
"In spite of the fact that government had created a department to assist in the management but it has not done enough in the direction, he said.The MP said he wanted political empowerment of the tribals of the state in any possible way adding that he played a role in making the SoO agreement possible, in the Indo-Naga peace talks, setting up of Indo-Myanmar border trade at Behiang, and inter village road connectivity and so on along with a possible helicopter service to the interior areas, setting up of a railway ticket counter and raising of the level of quotas by 7.5 percent in the railway exams.
