BSF arrests suspected PLA militants

Shillong : A mother and her son suspected to be members of the proscribed Manipur based Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) militant outfit and a Bangladeshi national were arrested from the Meghalaya border today, while trying to cross over to Bangladesh.

Border Security Force (BSF) officials told reporters today in Shillong that the three persons, were arrested while attempting to cross-over to Bangladesh from Beltoli near Icchamati in Meghalaya on Tuesday night. Mema, wife of Babu Thambi and her son, Master Vinod were arrested along with Narayan Singh, a Bangladeshi national was also nabbed. According to the BSF, Singh was detailed to guide both the mother and the son to the PLA training camp in Bangladesh.

The BSF also recovered eight incriminating documents, a mobile set with sim card, CD discs and two numbers of tape recorder cassettes containing details of training activities of PLA cadres and driving license of Mema besides others. However, the BSF did not recover any arms or ammunition from their possession.

The BSF said that Mema left Manipur on February 2 for Shillong and proceeded to Ichamati near the Indo-Bangladesh border where Narayan Singh the Bangladesh national was waiting to guide them to the PLA training camps in Chittagong Hills Tracts in Bangladesh wherein Mema's husband, Y Babu Thambi is living in the camp to impart training to PLA cadres.

The arrested persons along with seized items were handed over to Meghalaya Police for further investigation and legal action as per the law of the land, the BSF added.
