Bodies claimed, one disposed, morgue empty

Imphal, Jan 17 : In case no major incident takes place till tonight the rarely empty RIMS mortuary is likely to lie vacant after months as all four bodies kept there following shoot-outs and other violent acts in Imphal East district locations have been handed over to their respective family members/relatives while a fifth corpse had been disposed off as unclaimed body today.

Four out of the five bodies include three KCP cadres and a civilian driver slain in shoot-out between security forces and UG activists while the other was kept at the mortuary after being bludgeoned to death and awaiting identification.

With identities of two persons out of three gunned down by personnel of 115 Bn BSF at near Shantipur dam in Nongada area under Lamlai police station on January 14 night turning out to be KCP-MC cadres the corpses have been handed over after completion of relevant medical procedure.

One of the deceased has been identified as Chongtham Bocha alias Newton (27) s/o Ch Goshai of Langmeidong Mamang Leikai and other as one Yumnam Dilipkumar alias Raju (25) s/o Y Manglem of Meitram Makha Leikai.

Goshai, who is survived by his wife and a 6-year old son, reportedly left home some six months back with Dilipkumar informed to have left home about a month ago.

The latter is also said to have been engaged for marriage.

Body of the civilian driver namely Yambem Sashikumar of Khundrakpam Awang Leikai, shot dead along with the KCP duo, has also been taken by the family members today.

Sashikumar's body had been claimed after Forest and Environment Minister, Th Debendra currently the CM in-charge assured a JAC delegation to extend all possible assistance to family of the deceased youth.

The suspected KCP cadre slain in a shoot-out on January 15 night at Leimakhong Mapal of Imphal East district by a combined team of district police commandos and troops of 23 Assam Rifles has been identified as one Oinam Brojen alias Tiger (37) s/o O Manbi of Tumukhong Mayai Leikai.

Family members alleged that Brojen was apprehended at around midnight of january 14 by security force personnel in civies from his second wife's residence located at Taphou village of Senapati district.

He left behind three daughters and a son by the first wife while the second companion is informed to be in advance stage of pregnancy, as per comment of the family members.

The fourth body handed over to the family members today is that of the IRB personnel Md Shikandar (31) from Kwakta Khuman.

Shikandar was found dead inside the sentry post (tower) of Imphal East district police headquarters yesterday morning with tell-tale signs of being hit by a heavy object.

The corpse disposed off as unclaim body was kept at the mortuary after being smashed to death on january 11 morning by locals of Khurkhul Mamang Leikai on alleged charges of stealing two LPG cylinders and a bicycle.

Imphal Municipal Council personnel disposed the corpse after completion of post mortem and handing over by the police.

It may be contended that with spate of killings in different forms continuing unabated for the last many years the RIMS morgue had been one of the busiest places in the State.

First month of the new year too is no different as the mortuary had been occupied since January 2 with the exception of today, as per record maintained by The Sangai Express.
