Shillong, April 12 : The East Khasi Hills district administration has invoked Section 144 CrPC prohibiting carrying not more than Rs 50,000 in cash with immediate effect to check bribing of voters before the Lok Sabha elections.
The district administration has declared April 16, the day of polling, as a dry day to prevent the practice of distributing liquor to the electorate.
Deputy commissioner B. Dhar told mediapersons today that the Election Commission was aware of the distribution of money and liquor during elections. Police and the excise department have been asked to conduct surprise raids to prevent supply of liquor bottles during campaigns.
Dhar asked the parties to wrap up campaign by 4pm on Tuesday. The 24-hour bandh called by the HNLC from tomorrow evening has also been prohibited under Section 144.
