Imphal, April 10 : Election commissioner S.Y. Quraishi today reviewed security measures taken for the two-phase election in Manipur.
Expressing “satisfaction” over poll preparedness for the Outer and the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituencies, he hoped that elections in the state’s two Lok Sabha seats would be peaceful.
The Outer seat will go to the polls on April 16 while voting for the Inner seat will be held on April 22.
Quraishi and deputy election commissioner Alok Shukla met the leaders of political parties, superintendents of police, deputy commissioners, chief secretary and DGP Yumnam Joykumar Singh at the state secretariat conference hall separately today.
“We have thoroughly reviewed security measures in each district; the arrangements are quite satisfactory. We hope polling will be peaceful,” Quraishi later told journalists.
Without going into details, he said that the arrangements were quite adequate.
In addition to video coverage of the election process, micro-observers would be posted at vulnerable booths to check irregularities, Quraishi said.
Asked whether the prevailing law and order situation can ensure a violence-free election, he said the situation was “fully under control”.
During his meeting with political parties, the Congress representatives raised the issue of threats faced by its party workers from militant outfits. Quraishi assured the parties that nothing would happen on the days of polling.
He said micro-observers would be posted in at least 25 per cent of the 2,193 booths.
