Imphal, Jan 17: The 4th Students' Conference cum Cultural Meet 2009 of the All Kharam Students' Union Manipur (AKSUM) has been kicked off at Phaizol village (Sadar Hills) today.
The opening function was graced by Health and Family Welfare Minister Ph Parijat as chief guest and Kharam Union Manipur president R Umsoshan as functional president.
Laikot UJB School Headmaster R Saneiril and AKSUM president R Ashon were present in the function of guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Ph Parijat called upon the gathering to study pros and cons of the persisting gun culture during the students' conference.
Saying that guns may be used against wild animals, the Minister asserted that it would be wrong to use guns for taking human lives.
If the rampant killings continue any longer, small communities may face the grave threat of extinction, Parijat cautioned.
Pledging all possible support in all aspects of development, particularly for smaller communities like Kharam, he exhorted the gathering to learn from advanced countries like Japan to proceed towards human development.
Earlier taking advantage of the Minister's visit, the Kharam Village Authority submitted a memorandum to the Health Minister appealing for construction of a community hall there.
Nearly 583 delegates from Laikot Phaizol,Tuisenphai, Kharam Keithelmanbi and Kharam Pallel are taking part in the week long conference cum cultural meet.
