National Archery
Itanagar, Jan. 14 : Gwimalo Baro of Madhya Pradesh and Nitu Ingole of Maharashtra annexed the men and women’s 50-metre titles respectively in the 16th Indian Round National Archery Championship at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium at Naharlagun today.
Baro won the inaugural day’s event collecting 332 points out of 360. Amit Rajendra Kalaskar of Jharkhand scored 331 points to bag the silver and Ghasiram Besra of Indo-Tibetan Border Police finished third with 330 points.
In the 50-metre women’s event, Nitu Ingole of Maharashtra scored 313 points while Assam archers Binuma Brahma and Pratibha Boro scored 308 and 299 points respectively for the silver and bronze.
Altogether 217 archers from 28 states, including hosts Arunachal Pradesh, are vying for honours in the three-day championship.
The state has been chosen as the venue of the national sports event for the first time to promote archery among the youths of the tribal state. Only Mizoram has hosted such a tournament among the other states of Northeast in recent years. The tournament is being organised by the Arunachal Archery Association.
The 12-member Arunachal contingent is pinning its hopes on P. Thourani Devi who has won many medals at the national level. Her coach Ekashini Devi said Thourani was the state’s best medal prospect.
